Installing VMWare on Ubuntu

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

I KNOW there is a howto for this, and its very useful but i remember there were a few other little tricks to actually get it setup – and some gotcha’s with the service being rendered unstartable after a reboot intermittently – which i hope to address here. And Matt couldn’t get it working… :)

Setting Up Perbal Load Balancer on Ubuntu

Monday, January 11th, 2010

download the binaries from

http://search.cpan.org/dist/Perlbal/

standard perl module prerequisites include:

Danga::Socket
Sys::Syscall
IO::AIO

find these with
sudo apt-cache search socket | grep danga

(and just) install these with
sudo apt-get install libdanga-socket-perl
sudo apt-get install libsys-syscall-perl
sudo apt-get install libio-aio-perl

untar the downloaded file and run
sudo perl Makefile.PL
make
make test
make install

sudo mkdir /etc/perlbal
copy the conf file from http://www.livejournal.com/doc/server/lj.install.supplemental_sw.perlbal.html
into /etc/perlbal/perlbal.conf (this is where perlbal looks by default for its conf file)

make sure that Apache or any other daemon isn’t already bound to port 80. Assign a different port, like 8080 to apache if its running on the same system.

Before I Moved To Melbourne

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Before I moved from Perth to Melbourne a few years back:

  • It was OK to speak “says” instead of “sez
  • Nobody picked me up on saying “nothink” instead of “nothing
  • Going for a surf before / after work was a possibility
  • Checking www.bom.gov.au was only for sailors
  • It was Aussie to own a commodore.
  • Roadworthy certificate? what on earth for?
  • Coffee was only for those unable to drink beer
  • Going to the local watering hole was a drive not a walk

Broadford Track Day

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Well it was just a little wet for my liking… especially with dry tyres… but there were no spills and no (major) mechanical dramas. But a few close calls… and lots of power-sliding and almost high-siding!
